Gladiatrices
On
the contrary: Kathleen Coleman does not see this as a proof
that the woman was a gladiatrix because oil lamps were
common household items and the picture of a gladiator on one
of the lamps could simply mean that this woman was fan of
gladiator fights. The British historian Martin Henig sees
in the Anubis lamps and the incense burners with the pine
cones a hint that the woman was a follower of the Isis cult.
The curator of the museum, Jenny Hall assumes that one does
not exclude the other. And her co-worker Hedley Swain has
to admit that it is indeed an intriguing idea to have excavated
the grave of a gladiatrix but that it is not possible
to answer this definitely.
If this women from the grave in London is a gladiatrix
or not - it is for sure that gladiatrices existed and
that they fought as bravely and impressed the audience in
the amphitheater with their skills as much as their male counterparts.
